For nearly a quarter century, it’s been the premiere open water swimming event of the Caribbean. And again this March, swimmers from around the world challenge themselves on the Nevis to St. Kitts Cross Channel Swim – the only channel swim in the Caribbean. 

The 2.5-mile expanse of scenic water of the “Narrows” strait between the sister islands might not represent the longest or most difficult channel swim in the world, but it might be one of the prettiest. With Nevis’ famous, verdant volcanic peak behind them, intrepid swimmers start at Oualie Beach in Nevis and end at Spice Mill Restaurant in Cockleshell Bay, St. Kitts. Along the way, they may spot sea turtles or rays sharing the stunning, sparkling, jewel-toned waters with them. 

The Nevis to St. Kitts Cross Channel Swim might also be one of the most fun and feel–good events. Participants raise funds for local social and environmental causes, and the event engages both islands in tropical celebration over a four-day weekend (the 24th swim is on March 29, 2025). 

It’s easy for international visitors to join the event. Local organizers offer a package that includes entry to the cross-channel swim, a pre-race welcome lunch, an acclimatization swim and boat tour of the swim route, a race day transfer, a post-race celebration dinner on day three, a finisher’s medal, and event merchandise. 

And you don’t have to be an elite athlete to participate! In addition to competitors, recreational swimmers have a more leisurely option of making the swim using fins while being part of this one-of-a-kind event. (Two-and-a-half-mile swim with fins? You can do it!)

In fact, you don’t even have to be there during the channel swim weekend to challenge yourself. If you can’t make the March event, you can still arrange a channel swim of your own with support from the event’s organizer, who can provide comprehensive briefing and swim support, in the form of boat and in-water assistance, along with water and light refreshments.
